Torbay's gateway is the Kingskerswell section of the A380, and that is where journeys in and out most often bog down, above all on summer Saturdays and as a conference day ends. Inside the town, the seafront road between the harbour and Torre Abbey carries very nearly everything. Put an event on the green or the Pavilion forecourt and traffic gets shoved up onto the residential hill roads, which are narrow and never meant to take volume.

The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
