West of the city everything funnels to two crossings. The Tamar Bridge on the A38 is the main route and it queues at peaks and whenever there is an incident, while the Torpoint chain ferry is useful for the Rame peninsula but runs to its own schedule and stops for maintenance and weather. Journeys into south-east Cornwall are therefore planned around the crossing first and the destination second, which is the opposite of how a map suggests it.

North of the city the A386 climbs onto Dartmoor within minutes, and the open moorland roads towards Yelverton and Princetown carry livestock, cattle grids and fog that can arrive in the space of a mile. Brittany Ferries sailings from Millbay have long check-in windows and the approach roads fill before departure. For a flight from Bristol we would normally leave Plymouth around three hours ahead, and more on a summer weekend.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
