Head west and it all narrows to two crossings. The Tamar Bridge carries the A38 and takes the bulk of it, queuing at peaks and any time something goes wrong. For the Rame peninsula the Torpoint chain ferry earns its place, though it keeps its own schedule and halts for maintenance or weather. Journeys into south-east Cornwall therefore get planned around the crossing first and the destination afterwards, which is exactly the reverse of what a map implies.

North of town the A386 is up on Dartmoor inside a few minutes, and the open moorland roads towards Yelverton and Princetown bring livestock, cattle grids and fog that can close in over the space of a mile. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
