Come a race day, arrive early and plan the departure. Each of the two courses, the Rowley Mile and the July Course, has an approach of its own, and for an afternoon card the roads off the A1304 fill from mid-morning. Afterwards the exit stays slow for the better part of an hour. A collection point gets set away from the main flow, at a time that suits you rather than the car park, which usually means leaving calmly while others queue.

Working road of the district is the A14, tying Cambridge and the M11 in the west to Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich in the east; junctions 36 to 38 serve the town and the studs about it. Delay usually comes from the Girton interchange and the Bar Hill stretch, whereas the A11 running south towards Stansted moves well outside peak hours. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
