In a valley between two hills sits the Old Town, its net shops on the Stade, funicular lifts climbing either flank, and a working fishing fleet still hauled up the shingle. Westward of the pier the Victorian seafront carries on into St Leonards and the Regency terraces there. Battle and the abbey lie six miles north; Rye is a short run east. Visitors arrive for the coast and the art, while residents chiefly want a reliable way of reaching an airport.
Planning is what the Old Town lanes demand. All Saints Street and the High Street run narrow, one way in places, lined with parked cars, and the passages off them take pedestrians only, so we set down at the Bourne end or beside the seafront and walk you the short distance rather than attempt what plainly will not fit. Out of season the A259 moves well; in July it crawls. Roads climbing to the castle are steep, with tight hairpins all the way up.
An hour and a quarter to an hour and fifty on the A21 and the M23 normally covers Gatwick, and the A21 is where the figure moves. Central London takes two hours to two hours forty by road, though the train out of Hastings is often calmer, with a car waiting at the London end. Eastbourne lies thirty five to forty five minutes west, Rye twenty five minutes east, Ashford about fifty.

The A21 and the Old Town
Artery here is the A21 running north to Tonbridge and the M25, single carriageway over long stretches with little chance to overtake, so a slow vehicle ahead costs you real time instead of a couple of minutes. Worst of all are southbound weekend afternoons in summer, and Friday evenings. Through Battle and Hurst Green the alternative is scenic and no faster. For a morning flight we leave earlier than the mapping proposes, and we explain why.
Annual events reshape everything in the town, and there are several: Old Town carnival week, the May bank holiday procession, October's bonfire night, each of them closing the seafront and the Bourne for hours together. In summer, parking near the Stade has filled by mid morning. For guests the practical way up the hills is one of the two cliff railways, because road approaches to West Hill and the castle are steep, narrow and frequently full.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
