North out of town runs the A22, and it decides any airport departure: single carriageway in stretches around Hailsham and Uckfield, with a slow approach to the M23 in the morning. So we usually leave earlier than the mapping proposes. Within the town, the one way system around Terminus Road and Cornfield Road catches out any driver who does not know it, and several times a year the seafront closes for events, the summer airshow among them, when the whole promenade changes shape.

The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
