Lewes shuts its centre for the bonfire societies, the station takes no arrivals through the evening, and from late afternoon until well past midnight no vehicle crosses the town at all. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
