The level crossings on the Windsor branch are the local eccentricity. Datchet has one in the middle of the village and there are others at Sunnymeads and along the line, and they close often enough that we build a few minutes into any timing rather than treating them as an exception. The B470 through the village is the main road and it is single lane at the pinch points. For Heathrow we usually take the A308 to the M4 at junction five or the A332 to the M4 at junction six, whichever is running better.

Windsor sets the calendar. The horse show in the Home Park in May and Royal Ascot week in June both fill the roads on this side of the river, and state occasions bring closures around the castle and the Long Walk at short notice. Eton term dates add their own weekday rhythm along the bridge road. In winter the lanes towards Wraysbury and Horton sit low beside the river and hold standing water after prolonged rain, so we check the route rather than assume it.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
