Locally everything turns on junctions eight and nine of the M4, which function as one interchange. Going east towards Heathrow it starts to slow from about seven in the morning; going west it backs up from four in the afternoon, and worse again on a Friday. Much of the Buckinghamshire traffic uses the A404 between Marlow and the M4, so that road suffers whenever the M40 has an incident of its own. For an early departure we normally set off with twenty minutes in hand.

There are two weeks in the calendar that change how everything works round here. June brings Royal Ascot, which pushes traffic across the A308 and A330 from morning to night and leaves the course slow to escape until late in the evening. Then, in early July, the regatta at Henley does something comparable to the A4155 and the Marlow road. Any warm weekend fills Bray and Hurley, with the small riverside car parks taken by midday, so the car sets you down at the door and waits elsewhere.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
