Locally the trouble is the A27 Chichester bypass. Roundabouts at Fishbourne, Whyke and Bognor are the slowest points anywhere in the district, and the queues build from mid afternoon and hold well into the evening, so an airport run leaving between four and seven wants extra time. Westbound towards Havant and the M27 is generally the kinder half. Come a summer weekend, the A286 down to West Wittering can queue for miles, with no useful way round it.

Everything bends to Goodwood. Motoring weekends in summer and again in September, plus the racing fixtures in July and August, fill every hotel from Midhurst to Emsworth and reduce the A285, the A286 and the lanes at Halnaker to one slow procession. Set downs and collections happen at agreed points away from the main gates, with departures timed around the sessions. Festival theatre evenings empty into Northgate all at once, so we hold the car a street away rather than sit in the queue.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
