Rochester marks its Dickens connections twice a year, in early summer and again before Christmas, and on those weekends the High Street closes completely while the parades run. Parking across the whole peninsula fills by mid-morning and the Esplanade is impassable. We collect from the Corn Exchange end or from Star Hill, agreed in advance, and allow considerably longer than usual for anything scheduled immediately afterwards. The same applies to the smaller river festivals held on the Esplanade through the summer.

Crossing the river is the other thing to plan around. The M2 bridge at junction one to three, the older A2 crossing and the Medway tunnel on the A289 all serve the same movements, and when one is restricted the others fill instantly. Blue Bell Hill on the A229 towards Maidstone is a reliable morning queue southbound. For a Gatwick departure we would generally suggest leaving Rochester about three and a half hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
