Sale sits on the busiest quarter of the M60, and the stretch through Sale and Stretford is slow through both peaks and unpredictable outside them. Anything that goes wrong at Barton or along the Trafford stretch backs up here within minutes. For the airport we prefer junction 6 and the M56, and for the city we often take the A56 despite its traffic lights, on the basis that it is at least a known quantity when the motorway is not.

Trafford's event traffic reaches this far. Old Trafford, the cricket ground and the arena at the far end of the borough all draw crowds using the same motorway junctions, and a matchday or a concert night puts real pressure on the A56 and the M60 for a couple of hours either side. Greater Manchester's clean air arrangements have been revised more than once, and we simply keep the cars we use compliant with whatever currently applies.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
