Running through the town like a spine is the A1(M), junction 7 at the southern end, junction 8 up north. Southbound queues begin early towards Hatfield and the Hertfordshire tunnels around junction 4, and the northbound return builds from four in the evening. Shut the motorway, or delay it badly, and the parallel line is the B197, the old Great North Road, through Knebworth and Woolmer Green: slower, but reliable.
