Junction 21A of the M25 at London Colney is the gateway to everything south and west, sitting where the motorway, the M1 link and the A414 all meet. That interchange and the run to junction 21 are among the most heavily loaded stretches of the whole orbital, particularly westbound between seven and nine. For Heathrow we allow generously for it; for London we often take the A1081 through Radlett and pick up the A1 instead, which is slower on paper and calmer in practice.

Market days on Wednesday and Saturday close St Peters Street to traffic and fill the car parks from mid-morning, and the roads around the cathedral become slow on both. Term-time mornings near the schools on the Harpenden and Hatfield roads are the other predictable pinch. Going to Luton, the A1081 through Harpenden is the pretty route and the M1 from junction 7 the quicker one when the motorway is clear; your chauffeur decides on the morning itself.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
