The A505 governs almost everything here. It carries the town west towards Luton and east towards Letchworth and Royston, and it thickens noticeably between half past seven and half past nine as commuters feed onto the A1(M) at junction 8. Market days have a rhythm of their own: Tuesday and Saturday mornings fill the central car parks and the streets around the square slow to walking pace. For a morning departure we prefer to leave before the school run rather than behind it.

Luton Airport is close enough to be deceptive. The final approach through the airport road system can add ten or fifteen minutes at the Sunday evening and Monday morning peaks, and the drop-off arrangements are revised from time to time, so your chauffeur checks the current layout before the day rather than on arrival. Coming back from London it is the A1(M) between junctions 6 and 8 that decides the journey; when it stands still we cut across on the A602 through Stevenage and lose very little.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
