Twin turrets mark the castle at the water's edge, and the main street changes its name half a dozen times crossing the island. Just outside stand the great houses, Castle Coole and Florence Court. People come to Fermanagh for the fishing and the boating, for the Marble Arch caves under the Cuilcagh uplands, and for the resort golf along the Lower Lough shore. Of all the counties in the province this is the quietest, and it seems entirely content to be so.
Roads here bend around water, which makes distances feel longer than the map admits. The main artery is the A4, running east to Dungannon and the M1; the A32 goes north to Irvinestown and Kesh; and the A46 clings to the shore of Lower Lough Erne on its way to Belleek. Hotel and lodge entrances along the water sit well back down private drives, so access and turning arrangements are confirmed beforehand, above all for an arrival after dark.
Belfast International is the transfer we are asked for most, commonly an hour and a half to two hours by the A4 and the M1. North of here, Derry/Londonderry takes about an hour and a half, and Sligo and the Atlantic coast much the same going west. Dublin usually falls between two and two and a half hours. By Northern Irish standards these are real distances, so we set departures generously rather than optimistically.

Local Knowledge
Lough Erne and the western distances
Fermanagh is the one corner of the province where that famous compactness stops applying. From Enniskillen the north coast means a full day of driving there and back with almost nothing left over, and even Belfast counts as a proper journey rather than a hop. The road that matters is the A4, and the section between Ballygawley and Dungannon carries most of the traffic on it. A Belfast flight out of here gets planned with a great deal more margin than one from anywhere in County Antrim.
Close to home, though, it is all near at hand and gently done. Give a day to Castle Coole, Florence Court and the Marble Arch caves in the morning, then the lough shore road out to Belleek and its pottery in the afternoon, coming back by Kesh and Irvinestown. Devenish Island, with its round tower, is reached by boat from the town. Rain arrives off the Atlantic here more than anywhere else we cover, so we build itineraries around alternatives rather than assumptions.

Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
