Most of the work falls to the A3 and the A28, one feeding the M1 at Craigavon, the other running south-east towards Newry through Markethill and the drumlins. Between Loughgall, Richhill and Portadown the country lanes are narrow and hedged, lovely in May with the blossom out, slow behind farm traffic once autumn comes. We route with that in mind, and a chauffeur who knows the ground will happily go the long way round rather than lose ten minutes at a blind junction on a market morning.

A day out of Armagh reaches further than most visitors assume. The Mournes are about an hour and a half away by Newry, the southern shore of Lough Neagh barely half an hour, and the Fermanagh lakes at Enniskillen still allow an unhurried return before dark. Adding the north coast to that same day is the one plan we generally talk people out of. When a schedule looks tight, we say so, and propose the day that genuinely works.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
