What defines the town is a broad market square, a handsome old town hall and a working, unpretentious centre, with the head of Strangford Lough just beyond, mudflats and wintering birds and all. Scrabo Country Park climbs away behind. A short way down the eastern shore lie Mount Stewart's gardens. Guests arrive for the antiques and the market, for sailing at the head of the lough, and because this is the natural gateway to the whole Ards Peninsula.
No railway serves the town, so the roads carry everything. Over the Craigantlet hills from Belfast comes the A20, which then runs on down the peninsula to Portaferry; the A21 connects to Bangor; and the A22 goes south along the western shore towards Comber and Killyleagh. On trading days the market square fills up and the one-way system round it turns awkward, so set-downs are arranged just outside instead of in the thick of it.
Over the hills on the A20, Belfast takes twenty-five to forty minutes, while Belfast International, across the city, runs forty-five minutes to an hour and five. Bangor is a quarter of an hour north. Portaferry sits about forty minutes down the peninsula, Downpatrick roughly forty by Comber and the A22, and the Mournes an hour and a quarter away. Short runs, all of them, though the peninsula roads are no place to hurry.

Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula
Think of the peninsula as a long narrow finger with the lough down one side and open sea down the other, and the two coasts could not feel more different. Along the western shore the A20 passes Mount Stewart, Greyabbey and Kircubbin on its way to Portaferry and the ferry. The eastern side, through Millisle, Ballywalter and Ballyhalbert, is exposed, wind-scoured and a great deal quieter. Out by one and back by the other is the day we recommend most often from here.
On the ferry, timing counts for a great deal. Portaferry to Strangford runs frequently and takes only minutes, yet a strong wind will suspend it, and driving round the head of the lough by Comber adds a considerable amount to any return journey. We plan for both outcomes, and on the morning your chauffeur will tell you which looks likely. Mount Stewart's gardens, Scrabo's viewpoint and lunch at Greyabbey together make a full and unhurried day without ever leaving the lough shore.
