The A6 is the artery, and the improvements around Dungiven and the Glenshane have changed journey times materially, though the pass still catches weather. Heading east instead, the A2 through Limavady climbs Binevenagh and drops to the Roe estuary and Downhill, which is the prettier way to the coast and only a little slower. The city is also the natural gateway to Inishowen and the Donegal coast, where Grianan of Aileach, Malin Head and the beaches at Ballyliffin fit an easy day. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
