Three motorways arrive here: the M1 out of the south west, the M2 from the north, and the short M3 crossing the Lagan to the harbour and the Sydenham Bypass. Stitching them together is the A12 Westlink, at peak the single most congested piece of road in Northern Ireland, and the reason a nine o'clock meeting wants an eight o'clock departure from anywhere south. Where the route allows it, our chauffeurs come into the centre from whichever direction keeps clear of it.

Cruise season packs the harbour with early calls, and the standard shore day, Causeway and Bushmills going out, Carrickfergus or the Glens coming back, only sits comfortably if the car leaves promptly. As a base for the whole province Belfast works well: the north coast one day, the Mournes and Strangford the next, Fermanagh at a push. Light is short here in winter, so from November through February we plan a touring day to finish before dark rather than after it.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
