Above the town the cathedral occupies the mound where the story of Saint Patrick is rooted most firmly, the visitor centre below it and the ruins of Inch Abbey away across the Quoile. All around sits a working County Down market town of Georgian terraces and steep lanes. March brings pilgrims and coach parties, though the steadier trade comes from people touring the lough shore, the Lecale coast at Ardglass, and the Mournes rising away to the south.
For transport purposes this is deep countryside, and the main railway does not come near it. Belfast is reached on the A7 through Saintfield, the A25 runs east and west, and the A2 makes for Strangford and its ferry. Out towards Ardglass and Killough the lanes are narrow and hedged, and satellite navigation makes poor work of them, so directions to a farmhouse or a coastal cottage are confirmed with you in advance rather than puzzled over at a gate.
By the A7, Belfast comes to forty-five minutes to an hour, while Belfast International takes an hour to an hour and twenty, either through the city or by the M1. Newcastle and the Mourne coast are about half an hour to the south. Strangford, and the ferry crossing there, is a quarter of an hour east, and Bangor roughly forty-five minutes north around the lough. Sometimes the ferry timetable and the weather shape a day more than the clock does.

Local Knowledge
Strangford, Lecale and the Mourne road
Follow the A2 out to Strangford and it finishes at a short ferry crossing over to Portaferry, which turns the Ards Peninsula from a dead end into a proper loop. Castle Ward stands beside the slip, Mount Stewart waits on the far shore, and the whole circuit makes a comfortable day. Crossings answer to conditions and can be suspended when the wind gets up, so the road route round the head of the lough at Comber is always planned as the alternative.
Go south and the country shifts again. The A25 through Clough reaches the coast at Newcastle, where the Mournes drop nearly into the sea, and the road onward to Kilkeel and Rostrevor is among the finest short drives in County Down. The other direction gives you Lecale: Ardglass, Killough and a run of small harbours. A full day out of Downpatrick takes one or the other, though rarely both without trimming the best parts.

Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
