For five days at the end of May, the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea are given over to the show. Show gardens line the main avenues. Inside the great pavilion sit the nurseries and specialist growers. None of it is a sitting-down affair: several hours on gravel and grass, with a coffee and a long lunch somewhere near the middle. Early mornings run markedly quieter than the middle of the day.
Driving in Chelsea during show week is a trial. Restrictions and closures cover Royal Hospital Road and the streets around Sloane Square, residents' bays are enforced, and the Embankment crawls in both directions.
