The show fills the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for five days at the end of May. Show gardens sit along the main avenues, the great pavilion holds the nurseries and specialist growers, and the whole thing is walked rather than sat at: several hours on gravel and grass, usually with a coffee and a long lunch somewhere in the middle. Early mornings are markedly quieter than the middle of the day.

Chelsea during show week is difficult to drive in. Royal Hospital Road and the streets around Sloane Square carry restrictions and closures, residents' bays are enforced, and the Embankment is slow in both directions. A chauffeur takes you to a set-down point a short walk from the entrance, then waits away from the closures and returns when you are ready, with no meters, no circling and no long walk back at the end of a day already spent walking.

Two pieces of practical planning. First, aim for the earliest entry your ticket allows, since the gardens photograph better and the avenues are passable. Second, if you are attending on the final afternoon when exhibitors sell off their plants, think about the return journey before you buy, because a boot full of roses is a delightful problem only if there is a boot. Admission is arranged through the show; we handle the road and nothing else.

For two people an S-Class is ample and easy to place on a congested Chelsea kerb. A V-Class is the better answer for a group, for anyone with mobility considerations given the low step-in, and for sell-off day when boxes and trays need carrying. Where the day continues into lunch in Knightsbridge or dinner in Mayfair, we simply hold the car between stops rather than starting again.
