Between Wellingborough and Northampton the A45 acts as the local artery, with all the behaviour that implies. Westbound traffic builds from around half past seven; eastbound from four in the afternoon; and at the eastern end the Chowns Mill junction near Higham Ferrers has long been the pinch point. Before an airport departure we either get away ahead of the build or swing north on the A509 to Kettering and join the A14, which looks longer on paper and often turns out shorter in practice.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
