Most of our runs lean on junction 28 off the A38, and where you lose time is the approach, not the motorway itself. Cars coming in from Sutton-in-Ashfield and the Kings Mill side pile into the very same roundabouts, and from mid-afternoon the westbound stretch begins to drag. Further north, junction 29 by the A617 frequently wins for an evening trip south. Before any airport departure we weigh up both, instead of simply taking whichever looks shorter on the map.

Go north or east and the countryside arrives almost at once. The A6075 across to Edwinstowe, plus the lanes threading Clumber and the Dukeries, have no lighting, pinch in at points and draw plenty of visitors on summer Sundays; up on the higher ground near Warsop, frost hangs about deep into a winter morning. Then there are event days at the forest visitor centre and shoot days across the estates, which put cars on the road that no route planner sees coming. Anything leaving from out there before eight gets a margin built in.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
