The two motorway junctions are not equivalent. Junction 15 sits south-east on the A508 and takes the London-bound traffic along with a good deal of the Brackmills freight, while junction 16 to the west connects the A45 towards Daventry and is usually the calmer of the pair in the evening. Junction 15A serves the A43 and Towcester. The southbound M1 between here and Milton Keynes is the slowest local stretch on a Friday afternoon, so we leave earlier rather than sit in it.

Silverstone changes the county for several days each summer. Grand Prix weekend brings road closures and a controlled traffic plan across the A43 and the villages around Towcester, and the effect reaches the motorway junctions themselves. Other race meetings and test days have a smaller but similar influence. We plan those journeys around the published arrangements, agree a meeting point away from the main gates, and set out considerably earlier than the mileage suggests, since leaving is always the slower half.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
