Junctions 17 and 18 sit either side of the town, and knowing which to use is half the battle. Junction 18 at Chorleywood serves the anticlockwise run towards the M1 and Luton, while junction 17 at Maple Cross is the better choice southbound for Heathrow and the M40. Both fill from around seven in the morning, and the anticlockwise stretch past the M40 interchange at junction 16 is one of the least forgiving pieces of the whole motorway on a weekday.

Locally, the A412 through Mill End and on towards Denham carries a heavy commuter load, and the A404 towards Amersham slows through Chorleywood at school times. The Metropolitan and Chiltern services from Rickmansworth make a car and rail combination attractive, though the station car park is full early, which is a good argument for being dropped at the door. On summer weekends the roads around the Aquadrome and the canal fill with visitors and passing space narrows.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
