Bring a championship to Royal Portrush and the town changes shape for a week. Roads close, shuttle routes appear, and hotels fill for miles around, so accommodation ends up at Coleraine, Ballymoney or further out still, with a car running in each morning. That coast road heading east is the other draw. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
