Small enough to walk around, rich enough to fill a long weekend. Elm Hill still runs in cobbles under overhanging timber, the Lanes carry independent shops that would hold their own in any capital, and the close counts among the most peaceful corners anywhere in England. Business travel here follows the insurance and finance houses, along with the research park to the south. Visitors come for the Broads, for the north Norfolk coast, and for the theatre season.
Getting a car into the centre is genuinely restricted, and quite rightly. Between bus gates, pedestrian zones and one-way loops, an address in the Lanes is usually best served from Tombland, from St Andrews Street, or from the top of Prince of Wales Road. So the setting-down point gets agreed when you book, and nobody ends up giving directions from a pavement. As for the station, it stands across the river from the centre with a tight forecourt, so we meet guests a short walk away instead.
Nothing passes through Norwich on the way somewhere else; the road network simply ends here, and any plan has to allow for that. Reckon on twenty to thirty-five minutes for Wroxham and the northern Broads, about an hour for Holt and Blakeney, and thirty to fifty minutes on the A47 for Great Yarmouth. Further afield, the A11 and M11 put Stansted at one hour forty-five to two hours twenty, with London at two and a quarter to three hours.

The ring road and the A11 south
Everything Norwich does leans on its ring road, and on the outer ring above all. Busiest of the lot is the Thickthorn interchange, where the A11 meets the A47; it queues at both peaks and queues heavily on a Friday afternoon. The northern distributor route has eased the run towards the Broads and the north by a considerable margin. Inside the centre, two places will hold a car far longer than the distance ever warrants: Prince of Wales Road, and the area around Castle Meadow.
Going south, the A11 stays dual carriageway nearly the whole way to the M11, which makes the airport run dependable outside holiday weekends. Past Thetford and Elveden you meet slow farm traffic and speed enforcement in equal measure, and the Barton Mills roundabout onto the A14 sees seasonal queues. East and west it is a different story: long single carriageway sections on the A47 are exactly why Great Yarmouth, Dereham and King's Lynn get quoted generously rather than by distance alone.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
