Misjudging the Fair Green one-way system is easy to do, and coming at the shops from Western Road really is quicker than looping round. Eastbound, Streatham Road is the stretch that fills first in the morning, from about half past seven, and it takes an age to clear.
Roads cross Mitcham Common that run dark and fast after nightfall, which suits that hour well enough but slows right down at a weekend when the golf course and the recycling centre are both busy. On an early airport run, those lanes are the fastest way to the A23. School traffic around Grove Road and Church Road adds a solid ten minutes to any crossing journey at the usual hours.
