The A232 through Carshalton is the road everything depends on, and it slows at the Wrythe Lane junction and again at the Sutton end from about half past eight. The level crossings at Carshalton and Hackbridge can each add several minutes without warning, which is why we would rather leave early than gamble on them. Coming from the M25, the Banstead Road approach is usually kinder than fighting through Sutton town centre.
