Between the High Street market, the creek and the Victorian terraces behind them, Deptford keeps a texture that the newer riverside blocks have not managed to flatten. Goldsmiths students, studio tenants and families settled here for generations share the same streets, often at wildly different hours. Market days and creek crossings
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are market days on the High Street, and on those three the street is no use to a car at all, which catches out anybody who has only ever seen it on a Sunday. Creek Road is the artery between Greenwich and Rotherhithe, and it queues badly at the Deptford Church Street lights. Collecting in the morning from the terraces off Brookmill Road, we come in from Lewisham rather than cross the creek.
Approaches to Deptford Bridge and to Deptford station are both narrow, and under the railway arches there is barely room to squeeze past a car that has stopped. Evening collections go best from Giffin Street or the Albany end, where a vehicle can stand for a moment. Staying in one of the riverside developments? Give us the name of the block; entrances vary, and several can only be reached from Grove Street.
