Along the south bank opposite Chelsea lies Battersea, park and river marking its northern edge, Lavender Hill and Clapham Junction sitting behind. The power station is now a destination on its own account, shops, restaurants and offices packed inside it, while east at Nine Elms the new towers and the American embassy have filled the ground. Passengers come from the new residential population, from business travellers heading for Nine Elms, and from people crossing the river for an evening out.
What constrains things practically is the bridges. A weight limit on Albert Bridge excludes heavier vehicles, so a larger MPV goes over at Chelsea or Battersea Bridge instead, and that is worth knowing before a family sets off loaded with luggage. Chelsea Bridge and Queenstown Road queue at the peaks. Estate roads around the power station provide designated set-down points rather than open kerbside, and Prince of Wales Drive is restricted along the park. Battersea falls outside the congestion charge zone.
Travel splits between the new and the old. Shopping, dinner and events pull people to the power station; Battersea Park becomes a destination on a summer weekend and stages events that close its internal roads; restaurants around Battersea Square and up Lavender Hill look after the residential streets. Business journeys to Nine Elms and the embassy quarter form a growing share of what we do, along with transfers between here and the West End over the river.
Out of Battersea, Gatwick comes easiest: reckon on 45 to 80 minutes, whether down the A3 or through Clapham to pick up the M23. For Heathrow, allow 40 to 75 minutes, either over Chelsea Bridge and onto the A4 or west along the south bank to the M4. Put London City at 35 to 60 minutes. As for central London, ten to twenty-five minutes gets you across the river, and that explains why an SW11 evening tends to finish in a car rather than on a night bus.

Bridges, entrances and station sides
Two faces belong to Clapham Junction, and choosing wrongly buys you a trek through the station dragging cases. Out on St John's Hill the frontage is busier and the one everybody thinks of first; round the back on Grant Road it stays quieter, and that is frequently the better place to stand. Falcon Road joins them, crawling for most of the day. Which entrance you will use gets settled before you travel, rather than sorted out on the pavement with luggage at your feet.
Down by the water, Battersea Park Road and Nine Elms Lane carry the main east-west traffic, and both pinch in where the new development begins. Restrictions run along the park side of Prince of Wales Drive, which is why the residential turnings behind it suit a waiting car better. Queenstown Road climbs away from the river towards Lavender Hill, and from mid-afternoon onwards the approach to the bridge queues badly.
Hours here run oddly, and not to London's usual pattern. Nine Elms has a wholesale market that works right through the night, so its surrounding roads are busy long before the rest of London stirs and settled again by mid-morning. Weekend afternoons pack the Power Station out, as does the end of the working day on a Thursday or Friday, when the estate roads noticeably slow. Sunday mornings give you the easiest few hours of the week.

Battersea Park supplies the other occasions of the year. Choosing a departure time
Everything comes down to getting over the river. Chelsea Bridge and Queenstown Road slow right down from mid-afternoon, while the identical run at nine in the evening takes a fraction of that. Flying out of Gatwick or Heathrow in the morning? An early start repays itself twice over, and we will propose one instead of a heroic dash across town.
Weekends around the park, event nights at the Power Station and the weeks before Christmas fill up first. Larger vehicles go earliest of all, especially where a group travels with luggage. Short notice on a weekday is often perfectly workable, and where a date simply cannot be covered we tell you at once rather than leaving you hanging on for an answer.
