Pond, green and Church Road together make it feel like a small country town, though Hyde Park Corner is four miles off. Barn Elms and the wetlands take up the western edge, Castelnau runs arrow-straight north between stucco villas, and the terraces off White Hart Lane are a good deal tighter. Those we drive here are mostly families shuttling between the independent schools nearby, rowing households, and residents facing a long-haul flight with an unforgiving start time.
Water complicates it. Three sides of Barnes are wrapped by the Thames, so every departure opens with a choice of crossing, and Hammersmith Bridge has spent long spells of recent years shut to motor traffic. Our routes are drawn so they never rely on it, going out instead over Chiswick Bridge or Putney Bridge. The High Street and Church Road are slim, cars parked along both sides, so your chauffeur sets down at the door and then waits in a bay rather than blocking a lane.
Heathrow wants roughly 30 to 45 minutes, out along the South Circular to Chiswick Bridge and then onto the A4 or M4, with the Chiswick roundabout the piece most likely to cost you. Central London comes in at 35 to 55 minutes via Putney Bridge or Hammersmith. Gatwick is a longer business altogether, 70 to 100 minutes. Bridges, tides and race days
Along the whole northern edge of Barnes runs the Championship Course, Putney up to Mortlake. On the big race weekends The Terrace, Lonsdale Road and every approach to Barnes Bridge are either closed or crawling from mid-morning. We collect on those days from the far side of Rocks Lane, or from Castelnau, and let you walk the final stretch, which genuinely beats anything a car can do. Fine weather fills the Wetland Centre car park early, and it has never been a dependable place to wait.
North, Castelnau is the natural artery, and yet it feeds straight into the Hammersmith Bridge approach, so with the bridge shut to vehicles the queue that builds there leads nowhere useful. Rocks Lane down to the Upper Richmond Road, then west for Chiswick Bridge, is the dependable exit at almost any hour. School mornings around Church Road and Nassau Road are the tightest twenty minutes in the Barnes day, and the timings we give carry a margin for them.

Traffic in London is predictable enough to plan around, and far too variable to ignore. Two windows reshape a schedule: weekday mornings heading into the centre, and the long crawl outward from four until seven. Our quoted timings reflect those, not what a mapping application shows on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends open up considerably by comparison. Airport legs are the ones most worth padding.
Nowhere else in the country holds availability as deep as the capital, which is why short-notice requests frequently work, same day included. Exceptions are the obvious ones. December evenings.
