Junction nine, where the M3 meets the A34 at the top of the Twyford Down cutting, carries almost everything into the city and it queues in both peaks. Junction eleven at St Cross is the better approach for the south of the city and for the park-and-ride sites, and junction ten is closed to some movements, which catches out unfamiliar drivers. When the A34 is disrupted we use the A33 and A272 instead, which is slower in theory but far more predictable.

The Christmas market in the Cathedral Close runs through late November and December and transforms local traffic. The Close itself takes no visitor vehicles, park-and-ride fills by mid-morning at weekends, and the Broadway and City Bridge slow all day. We set down at an agreed point outside the closure and collect from the same place. For a Heathrow departure we would ordinarily suggest leaving Winchester about three and a half hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
