Each bridge has a different job. Kew Bridge takes you directly north into Chiswick and is the first thing to seize up whenever the Great West Road is in trouble. A few minutes west along Mortlake Road, Chiswick Bridge is usually calmer for anything joining the M4. Through the afternoon the queue for Kew Bridge builds back along Kew Road, and if a flight is waiting we would sooner pull away five minutes early than find ourselves inside it.

Visiting the Gardens, you are better set down at the Kew Road entrance than at the gate on the Green, which is ringed by narrow roads and, come summer, by cricket. Evening events run their own entrance, and the Green is shut to casual parking, so the meeting point gets agreed at the quotation stage.
