From Fulham Broadway the district runs west and south down to the river, taking in Parsons Green, the New King's Road, Bishops Park and Fulham Palace at the Putney Bridge end. Newer riverside development sits east at Sands End and Imperial Wharf. This is family territory, all schools, commons and terraced streets, with a busy line of shops and restaurants along the Fulham Road and the New King's Road. Passengers here are local residents almost without exception.
Narrow, parked along both sides and slow at almost any hour, the New King's Road sets the tone, and the Fulham Road is not much better. Stamford Bridge stands on the Fulham Road towards the Chelsea end, and a match day closes roads and fills the whole area for hours together. Down by the river, Craven Cottage produces a smaller version of the same thing. Crossings are Putney Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge, and both queue in the peaks. Fulham lies outside the congestion charge zone.
Journeys out of Fulham usually end up elsewhere: dinner in Chelsea or Mayfair, an early flight, a weekend away, the school run first thing. Closer to home, restaurants along the New King's Road and around Parsons Green throw up evening work, while Chelsea Harbour and its design showrooms sit just over the boundary at the eastern end. Family travel is a steady thread too, and that is where an MPV with space for luggage and a pushchair earns its keep.
Reckon on 30 to 55 minutes for Heathrow, by the A4 or by the M4 from Chiswick, and it ranks among the more dependable runs west. Gatwick wants 55 to 90 minutes over Wandsworth Bridge and down the A3 to the M25. Central London is 20 to 40 minutes. Ascot, Windsor and the Thames Valley need 45 to 75 minutes, which makes Fulham an easy base for a summer day beyond the city.

How Fulham actually moves
Meet on the Fulham Road frontage, or on a side turning, and never inside the complex itself: that is the rule at Fulham Broadway, whose station hides behind the shopping centre and which is nonetheless the practical centre of everything here. When the main road stops dead, Harwood Road and Effie Road will take a car comfortably. Go further west and both Munster Road and Dawes Road carry a surprising amount of local traffic, with very little legal standing space to show for it.
Waiting is easier in the quieter southern half. Parsons Green itself, the roads circling Eel Brook Common and the residential grid off Peterborough Road all let a car stand without causing anybody trouble. Everything funnels down Fulham High Street towards Putney Bridge, and it backs up in both peaks; Wandsworth Bridge Road does the same each evening as traffic gathers for the crossing. Bishops Park stays calm, match days excepted.
Time runs domestically here rather than commercially. The school run shapes a morning, and it starts earlier than people expect before clearing by mid-morning. Around six the evening fills again, and the restaurant streets stay busy late without ever tipping into chaos. Come a fixture day and that whole pattern is replaced: roads close, parking suspends, and the district gains and then loses a crowd inside a few hours.

Distance counts for less around here than the hour you pick. Roughly between half past seven and nine, the Fulham Road and the bridges swallow time in quantities that surprise people, and the whole thing repeats from five. Step outside those two windows and heading west takes almost no time, while running into town stays easy. An early flight is the exception: we tend to be at your door before six, when this district is as quiet as it ever gets.
SW6 fills up on fixture weekends, through half-terms, and on the first fine Saturday of the summer. Those are our busiest moments. Larger vehicles get committed first, so a family travelling with cases behind them is wise to ask early. Midweek daytime requests can often be sorted at very short notice, and we would far rather field the question than have you quietly assume nothing is free.
