Think of Hammersmith as a transport junction with a riverside village hanging off it. Enormous volumes of traffic pour through the Broadway gyratory and over the flyover; a few hundred metres south, Lower Mall and Upper Mall run quietly beside the Thames past boathouses and old riverside pubs. Shopping happens on King Street, while the theatre on Queen Caroline Street draws several thousand people in on a concert night. Passengers are residents, business travellers and concert-goers in roughly equal measure.
Understand the gyratory and you understand the place: one way, multi-lane, and easy to get wrong, with the flyover carrying the A4 over the top of it. Neither one allows stopping. So our set-downs go to Queen Caroline Street, to Butterwick, or to the quieter turnings off King Street. Hammersmith Bridge has been shut to motor traffic in recent years, which sends river crossings via Putney or Chiswick, and we confirm the current position before the day. Hammersmith lies outside the congestion charge zone.
Concerts give the most predictable pattern: a set-down before doors open, then a collection afterwards from a point away from the venue, because the streets beside it fill in seconds. Lunches along the Mall by the river are the other local draw, especially in summer and around the boat race, which shuts the towpath and much of the surrounding area for a whole day. Business travel to the offices strung along the Great West Road accounts for most of the remainder.
For anywhere west, this address is quick. Heathrow generally takes 25 to 45 minutes straight down the A4 and M4, which explains why so many of our airport runs start here. Turn the other way and central London is 20 to 40 minutes. Gatwick is the harder one, 60 to 100 minutes. Windsor, Ascot, Oxford and the Cotswolds all follow from the M4 and M40, both of them minutes from the door.

Approaches, riverside and crossings
Fulham Palace Road heads south of the Broadway towards the hospital and on into SW6, carrying more traffic at almost any hour than its width would suggest. For the riverside, Crisp Road and the turnings towards Furnivall Gardens give quieter access than the Mall does. Then there is Brook Green, north-east of the flyover between Shepherd's Bush Road and Hammersmith Road: residential, calm, and a place where a car can wait with no difficulty whatever.
River crossings keep coming up here. Vehicles have not been able to use the bridge for some years now, so anything southbound goes by Putney or by Chiswick, and those two behave nothing alike: Putney stacks back along the Lower Richmond Road, while Chiswick adds distance and generally keeps moving. Riverside roads west of the bridge sit low, low enough that a high spring tide can put water across them, which is worth knowing before a winter evening beside the Thames.
Two clocks run in Hammersmith. Commercial hours belong to the Broadway, the bus station and King Street, where deliveries and school traffic conspire to make mid-morning slower than the peak itself. Evenings belong to the river and the venues, and the area empties in a rush rather than a trickle. Late at night the A4 is about the fastest road in west London, which explains why so many airport runs from here begin before dawn rather than after it.

One helpful thing about Hammersmith traffic is how predictable it is. The Broadway runs slow from mid-morning until well past the evening peak; the A4 westbound flows freely very late and very early. For a morning flight we would suggest leaving ahead of the school run rather than trying to beat it, and where a requested time looks optimistic we say so plainly.
Here availability tracks the venue calendar more closely than the season. Nights carrying a major performance fill first, along with regatta weekends and the run-up to the summer holidays, and larger vehicles go earliest because groups take them.
