Richmond sits on a bend of the Thames with the Green at its centre, Richmond Hill rising above the river and the park spreading south from the top of it. Kew Gardens lies to the north, Ham and Petersham to the south, and Twickenham a bridge away to the west. It is prosperous, green and largely residential, and our passengers here are families, retired residents and people who work in town but long ago stopped commuting by train with luggage.

Richmond Park has gates that close overnight and a twenty mile an hour limit with deer crossing at dawn and dusk, so it is a pleasant route and never a fast one. Richmond Bridge and the town centre queue at weekends, and George Street and Hill Rise are difficult to stop on. Petersham Road narrows considerably below the hill. The whole area sits outside the congestion charge zone but inside the ultra low emission zone, which every vehicle we operate meets.

Local travel is about the riverside — the pubs and restaurants along the towpath, the terrace on Richmond Hill, the theatre on the Green — and about Kew Gardens, which is a short drive but a poor walk with children. Twickenham fills the roads entirely on international rugby days, and we plan collections well away from the stadium approaches. Beyond that, most journeys head into central London for the evening or out west for something longer.

Heathrow is the headline advantage: typically 25 to 45 minutes via the A316 and M4, or the A30 depending on terminal. Gatwick runs 55 to 90 minutes round the M25. Central London is usually 35 to 65 minutes along the A316 and the Cromwell Road. For Ascot, Windsor and the Thames Valley allow 30 to 55 minutes, which makes Richmond one of the better London addresses for a race day.
