On a bend of the Thames sits Richmond, with the Green at its centre, Richmond Hill climbing above the river and the park spreading away south from the top of it. North of that lies Kew Gardens; to the south, Ham and Petersham; and west, across a bridge, Twickenham. Prosperous, green and largely residential. Passengers here are families, retired residents, and people who still work in town but gave up commuting by train with luggage a very long time ago.
Gates on Richmond Park shut overnight, a twenty mile an hour limit applies inside, and deer cross at dawn and dusk, which makes it a pleasant route and never a quick one. Weekends bring queues to Richmond Bridge and the town centre, while George Street and Hill Rise are awkward places to stop. Below the hill, Petersham Road narrows considerably. All of this ground falls outside the congestion charge zone but inside the ultra low emission zone, which every vehicle we operate meets.
Locally it all comes back to the riverside: pubs and restaurants along the towpath, the terrace up on Richmond Hill, the theatre on the Green. Kew Gardens counts too, a short drive and a poor walk with children in tow. On an international rugby day Twickenham fills every road, so collections get planned well away from the stadium approaches. Otherwise most journeys head into central London for the evening, or out west for something longer.
The headline advantage is Heathrow: 25 to 45 minutes as a rule, by the A316 and M4, or the A30 according to terminal. Gatwick takes 55 to 90 minutes round the M25. Central London normally runs 35 to 65 minutes along the A316 and the Cromwell Road. Ascot, Windsor and the Thames Valley want 30 to 55 minutes, which puts Richmond among the better London addresses for a race day.

Everything in Richmond town centre funnels down into a handful of streets. George Street, Hill Street and The Quadrant take nearly all of it while offering next to nothing by way of legal waiting, and Richmond Bridge, the oldest surviving Thames crossing in London, turns into a queue at more or less any weekend hour. For the riverside, the practical set-downs are the turnings towards the water: Water Lane and Friars Lane among them.
Past the centre, the geography turns generous. The A316 sweeps by en route to Twickenham Bridge and the M3; Kew Road climbs north to the gardens, where Victoria Gate is the usual set-down; Sheen Road and Lower Mortlake Road strike east for Mortlake and Barnes. Below Richmond Hill, Petersham Road narrows a great deal and can crawl in either direction. On the highest spring tides, the riverside walk under the bridge floods.
Treat Richmond Park as a route, never as a shortcut. Its gates, Richmond, Ham, Sheen and Roehampton among them, open and shut with the light; twenty miles an hour is the limit throughout; deer wander across the carriageway at dawn and dusk as they please. No schedule of ours ever leans on it. This borough falls outside the central charging zone yet inside the low emission requirements, which every vehicle we put on the road meets.

Two stretches of the year want proper notice. Autumn internationals, then the Six Nations weekends through February and March, pull vehicles right across south-west London, and the Wimbledon fortnight at the turn of June into July does exactly the same.
