Between the Great West Road and Heathrow lies Hounslow, its town centre gathered round the High Street and the shopping precinct, with Osterley and Syon Park supplying green space away to the north and east. Westwards along the Bath Road corridor, airport hotels line the route. This is a working residential borough rather than a destination in its own right, and most passengers here are either tied to the airport or living locally and travelling into town.
Arteries here are the A4 Great West Road and the M4 at Junction 3, quick enough outside the peaks and thoroughly unpleasant within them. Most of the High Street is pedestrianised, so collections come from the roads around it and the car parks behind. Hotels along the Bath Road keep their own forecourts and give no trouble. Hounslow lies outside the congestion charge zone but inside the ultra low emission zone, a standard every vehicle we operate meets.
Airport work dominates: an overnight stay before an early departure, a business collection from one of the Bath Road hotels, a family landing late and staying locally before going on the next morning. Past that, Osterley Park and Syon House pull visitors in at weekends, and there is regular work carrying residents into central London for the evening, which beats the Piccadilly line with luggage by a very long way.
Heathrow generally comes to 10 to 25 minutes, terminal depending, and no airport run we make anywhere is shorter. Central London normally takes 35 to 65 minutes along the A4 or M4. West of here, Windsor is 20 to 35 minutes and Oxford 55 to 85 minutes on the M25 and M40. Gatwick is the awkward direction, 60 to 100 minutes round the M25, and for a morning flight we would leave early.

Hounslow beyond the flight path
Traffic is mostly shut out of the compact town centre, which is why we collect from Lampton Road, Kingsley Road and the streets circling the bus station instead of the precinct itself. Heading west, Staines Road runs towards Feltham and the A30; heading east, London Road takes you to Isleworth and Brentford. Piccadilly line stations dot the western side of the town, so plenty of residents know the tube well and ring us only for the trips where it is no help at all.
Spine and landmark both, that is the Great West Road. Art deco frontages along the Golden Mile now stand shoulder to shoulder with modern office blocks, and Gillette Corner with the Syon Lane junction marks where the eastern end stops. At the far western end, Junction 3 of the M4 feeds the airport and the motorway alike, and that is where a journey either flows or grinds. North and east lie Osterley and Syon Park, green and quieter than anyone expects.
Two clocks run here, and the two of them seldom agree. Airport life turns on the first departures and the last arrivals, leaving the western end awake before dawn and busy all over again near midnight. Commuters keep to something more conventional, with the A4 and the M4 filling from around seven and once more in the late afternoon. Rugby internationals at the stadium a short drive south clog the whole district for the day.
