Through the morning and evening peaks the Sheen Lane crossing shuts again and again, and a car stuck on the wrong side of it can lose ten minutes without moving an inch. Early airport runs therefore start on the northern side of the railway, joining Mortlake Road and turning for Chiswick Bridge. Later, once the trains thin out, that crossing is hardly an inconvenience, and the direct line through the village becomes much the pleasanter of the two.

Just short of Chiswick Bridge the Boat Race ends, and on that weekend the High Street, Thames Bank and every bridge approach are either shut or heaving from late morning until long after the crews are ashore.
