The A650 through the Aire valley and the A629 towards Halifax and Skipton are the two roads that matter, and the valley route carries a genuine commuter load into Bradford and Leeds each morning. The bypasses at Bingley and Cottingley help a great deal; the sections that remain single carriageway do not. For the airport the line through Ilkley and Guiseley is sometimes quicker than the valley, and we choose on the day rather than in advance.

Haworth is the specific local challenge. The cobbled Main Street rises sharply and is closed to traffic at the top, parking is limited and fills by late morning in season, and the railway brings its own crowds on running days. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
