Junctions 23, 24 and 25 of the M62 all serve the town, and Ainley Top at 24 is the one that decides most timings, since the A629 and A62 both feed it. Westbound, the climb over the summit is exposed and can be slowed by wind, snow or spray at any point between November and March. The A62 over Standedge is the classic alternative to Manchester and a lovely drive, but it is slow and quite unsuitable once the weather closes in.

The A616 and A628 towards Sheffield cross open moor and carry restrictions on high-sided vehicles in strong winds, so we check the position before committing to that line. Locally, university terms and matchdays at the town's stadium both change the evening pattern near the ring road, and the Holmfirth roads fill with visitors on fine weekends. We plan the approach and the exit before the day so that nothing has to be decided at the kerb.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
