At Junction 27 of the M62 the M621 peels off for Leeds, and that one point decides most Batley timings. Westbound for Manchester it slows from mid-afternoon; eastbound it can back up towards Gildersome at almost any hour of the day. When the motorway stalls, the A62 through Birstall is the honest alternative, and the A652 does the same job in the other direction towards Bradford.
