Everything hangs on the A65, which runs down Airedale through Ilkley and Guiseley into Leeds, and the opposite way towards Settle and Kendal. A good road on the whole, with slow patches where it threads the villages, and the section past Gargrave and Hellifield takes holiday traffic on summer weekends. East to Harrogate the A59 crosses Blubberhouses Moor, open to the weather and one of the first roads round here to suffer once snow arrives.

Once inside the National Park the roads become the point rather than the problem, though slow they certainly are: single track with passing places above Malham and Arncliffe, cattle grids underfoot, and sheep entirely unmoved by your schedule. Dales days therefore get generous timings and a route chosen for enjoyment instead of directness. On market days the High Street is full from early morning, so the collection moves to a side street.
