Regatta week runs from the Wednesday to the Sunday at the start of July and it changes every road in the town. The Fair Mile and the A4155 towards Marlow carry the arriving traffic, temporary parking fields open on both banks, and the exit on the Saturday and Sunday evenings is slow whichever route you take. We set down before the crowd builds, agree a collection point off the main approach, and keep the chauffeur with the car throughout the day.

Outside the regatta the same roads behave very differently. The A4155 to Marlow is narrow through Mill End and slow behind agricultural traffic, and the climb up to Nettlebed and Stonor is a proper Chilterns lane with blind bends. For Heathrow the A404 is the sensible spine, though the M4 between junctions eight and nine holds traffic from seven in the morning. Riverside houses along the Wargrave road often have narrow gates worth mentioning in advance.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
