The B2036 through Balcombe and Crawley Down is the quiet route to Gatwick and it is often quicker than the A23 in the morning, though it is narrow and slow behind anything agricultural. The A23 itself queues at Bolney and Warninglid on Friday afternoons and on summer weekends heading to the coast. For an early flight we usually take the B road and rejoin near Copthorne; for a late one the motorway is the better bet.

The showground at Ardingly holds major shows and large antiques fairs several times a year, and the lanes around Ardingly, Balcombe and Turners Hill fill for miles on those days, with marshalled parking and slow exits. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
