On the south bank, gathered round the Old Royal Naval College, sits Greenwich, the park climbing behind it towards the Observatory with Blackheath spreading beyond that. Visitors pack the town centre for the Cutty Sark and the market, while Crooms Hill and the streets running towards Blackheath stay quietly residential. Off to the north-east, the peninsula carries the arena and the newer riverside development. Passengers are a blend of residents, concert-goers, and visitors making a day of the park and the river.
Everything here is defined by the crossings. Historically the pinch point has been the Blackwall Tunnel, and the Silvertown crossing beside it has altered the northbound picture, though both queue at the peaks and both are tolled. The Greenwich foot tunnel is precisely what its name says and takes no vehicles whatever. In the town itself Greenwich Church Street and College Approach run narrow and thick with pedestrians, so set-downs go to Romney Road or the park side. Greenwich falls outside the congestion charge zone.
Busiest of all is an event night at the arena out on the peninsula, several thousand cars attempting to leave the same roads in the same minute, and the answer is invariably a collection point clear of the immediate approaches. Otherwise the draws are the park and the Observatory, the maritime buildings, the market, and the restaurants strung along the river towards Deptford. A short drive up the hill, Blackheath adds village dining.
Very close by sits London City Airport, 15 to 35 minutes as a rule with the crossing deciding, which makes Greenwich a genuinely convenient base for European travel. Gatwick normally takes 45 to 80 minutes down the A2 and M25. Heathrow is the long one, 60 to 100 minutes right across the city. Central London comes to 30 to 55 minutes via the Rotherhithe Tunnel or Tower Bridge, and a good deal more when either is busy.

Tunnels, hills and the town
Inside Greenwich, width is what decides everything. King William Walk borders the park and takes a car without complaint. Park Row falls away from Romney Road down towards the river. Nelson Road and the market lanes simply will not. Everything heading through town towards Deptford uses Greenwich High Road, while Creek Road crosses a lifting bridge that can halt traffic with no warning at all, which is precisely why nobody should leave a departure until the last five minutes.
Nobody should treat the park as a shortcut. Restrictions cover its internal roads and the gates shut around dusk, so collecting someone from the Observatory means arranging a meeting at a gate instead of at the summit. Blackheath, sitting above it, behaves altogether differently. Roads over the heath run open and quick; Tranquil Vale and the village streets offer very little standing room; and the A2 remains the fastest way south-east out of the area, by some margin.
Here the clock counts for as much as the map. Northbound crossings start filling from first light and stay heavy through to mid-morning, then run the other way once the offices empty. Weekends bring their own pattern: the town clogs in the middle of the day, the market swallows every approach, and the riverside turns pedestrian in all but name. Late in the evening it all falls quiet, and a car crosses the peninsula in a fraction of what the same run costs at six.

When to arrange it
Availability in Greenwich turns on two things: what the peninsula has booked in, and the marathon weekend each spring. Both fill our diary early, with the larger vehicles for groups going first of all. An ordinary weekday transfer is usually workable at short notice. Even an early run out to London City can often be arranged the day before, provided you tell us.
Every timing we quote has the crossings folded into it. Travel north at eight in the morning and you are not making the same journey you would at eleven, so we set a collection time that holds up rather than one that flatters. Should your plan leave no room for a queue at the tunnel, we will say so before you commit and suggest a departure that does.
