A West End evening usually starts with dinner somewhere within walking distance and a curtain that goes up around half past seven. Two and a half to three hours later, with an interval in the middle, several hundred people come out onto a narrow street at once. Opera and ballet run longer and often have a proper interval built for eating. Matinees compress the whole thing into a busy afternoon instead.

Shaftesbury Avenue, the streets around Covent Garden and much of Soho are either pedestrianised, one-way or restricted in the evening, so the practical arrangement is a set-down at an agreed corner a short walk from the door, and a collection at the same place.
