Junction 25 is the town's main motorway access and it has been reworked in recent years alongside changes to the A358, so the surrounding layout is worth checking rather than assuming. It is the busiest point locally in both peaks, and the Toneway approach from the town can be slow for a considerable stretch. Junction 26 at Wellington is often the quieter option for anything heading south, and we choose between them by direction and time of day.

The A358 towards Ilminster and the A303 is the route east for a great many journeys, and it is single carriageway with slow sections and known summer queues, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays from July onwards. Cricket weeks fill the roads around the county ground and the town centre car parks well before play starts. For an early flight from Bristol we would leave Taunton around two hours ahead, and more on a holiday weekend.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
