A full house at the Stadium of Light spills onto Millennium Way and the roads towards the Wearmouth Bridge inside about fifteen minutes, after which nothing moves at any speed. What we do is set down close in before the crowd builds, then collect from a fixed point south of the river, usually near the station or over at Keel Square, so that you walk five minutes and drive off rather than sit in the middle of it. Sunderland's rail link to London goes either through Newcastle or, on the direct service, straight into King's Cross in around three and a half hours. That counts for a good deal, because driving takes five to six hours and a same-day return keeps nothing back should a meeting overrun. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
