Hampstead sits on a hill above the rest of London, with the Heath spreading north and east and the village clustered around Hampstead High Street, Heath Street and the lanes off them — Flask Walk, Church Row, Well Walk. Kenwood House stands at the top of the Heath and Parliament Hill looks back over the whole city. It is residential, literary and deliberately unhurried, and the people we carry here mostly live here rather than visit.

The village streets are the tightest we work in regularly: steep gradients, parked cars on both sides, and turns that a long-wheelbase vehicle simply cannot make. Heath Street and Fitzjohn's Avenue are the through routes and both queue badly at school times. Spaniards Road narrows to a single-file pinch beside the old inn, where traffic gives way in turn. Resident permit bays dominate the kerbside. Hampstead is well outside the congestion charge zone, which keeps local journeys simple.

Most Hampstead journeys go somewhere else. Evenings in the West End, dinners in Marylebone and Mayfair, theatre in the centre, and the daily traffic to schools and offices further south. The village itself supports a good number of restaurants and a much-loved cinema, which generate short local runs on a wet night. There is also a steady flow to and from the airports, since NW3 sits awkwardly for public transport once luggage is involved.

Luton is the natural airport from Hampstead: typically 40 to 70 minutes up the M1. Heathrow runs 45 to 80 minutes, most reliably via the North Circular and the M4 rather than through town. Stansted is usually 55 to 90 minutes on the A1 and M11. Gatwick is the long one at 70 to 115 minutes. St Pancras for the Eurostar is ten to twenty-five minutes south, which makes a Hampstead start to a Paris morning very comfortable.
